The Key Holder

Being Real, Christian Life, Hope, Scripture, Truth

At the beginning of the year, the Lord spoke to me regarding a special passage in Scripture….He gave me a Word concerning the keys to the kingdom of heaven. At first, I wasn’t sure it was Him speaking. So I did a quick search on google and found the special words shared with us many years ago. It’s found in Matthew chapter 16.

Matthew 16:16-19 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, by My Father who is in heaven. I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”

When the Lord speaks to us – it will ALWAYS line up with Scripture – His Word. If it doesn’t, it’s not Him speaking.

I asked the Lord, what are the keys to kingdom of heaven? And yesterday He gave me divine revelation to answer that question. My boss and I were pouring through over 200 resumes when she stopped and asked the question, “what is a key holder?” Another young woman who works with us answered, “it’s someone who gets a set of keys, basically an assistant manager.” Through this exchange all I could think about was ol’ Peter.

Jesus told Peter He would give him the keys to the kingdom of heaven. I’ve heard people describe these keys as “authority”. But I never could make that click in my head…until someone explained what a key holder was. As I did some further research, it seems key holders are commonly found in the retail department store industry. They are in fact much like assistant managers.

Assistant managers are given power and authority. We can all relate to the role of an assistant manager in one way or another – either you been one, are one, know one, work where there is one, loved one, hated one, was indifferent to one. I am an assistant manager, so that spoke to me directly about the authority and power that came with those keys and the responsibility.

The Lord didn’t stop there though, He emphasized to me that Peter was an assistant manager to Jesus Christ. He acted on behalf of Jesus, in full power and authority, once Jesus left. Most assistant managers have complete power and authority in the absence of the manager. Jesus said He had to leave….He had to leave to give us that power and authority because otherwise, we would still have Him here as the boss and we would not be the ones in charge on earth. Yes, God is sovereign and has full power and authority and control. But we have power and authority that has been given to us. We have a responsibility – to assist in managing heaven while here on earth.

If you pay close attention to the scripture, it tells us that He would give those keys and then Peter could bind and loose on earth and it shall be done in heaven. Peter was managing heavenly matters while here on earth. He was trusted with much. And we are too.

This brings me to my next question though: when do we receive the keys to the kingdom of heaven? What are your thoughts?

I would love to hear what the Lord speaks to you through this post or has spoken to you regarding this matter. Please feel free to share. There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus, and there is no right or wrong. We are all trying to navigate our way through life, and I’m thankful that the Holy Spirit guides each of us through this journey!
